About Benedict House

Benedict House is an innovative program that provides emergency shelter and transitional housing with supportive services for single homeless men and homeless men with children.  This unique program incorporates two elements of the continuum of care model emergency shelter and transitional housing.  The underlying purpose is to help residents rebuild their lives and to move them towards permanent housing, the third element in the model.  Residents may stay for a period of up to 90 days in emergency bed, up to 1 year in a transitional bed and up to 2 years in the family unit. 

Residents began moving into Benedict House April 28, 2006. Benedict House is the only facility for homeless men and homeless men with children in Kitsap County. 

The residence is named for St. Benedict Labre, patron saint of homeless persons.

Programs

Emergency Shelter
Benedict House provides a 14 emergency beds for single homeless men who are currently homeless in Kitsap County.  The Shelter program is a 90 days and is free of charge.  It is a program that provides a physically and emotionally safe environment that enables to focus on their futures and accommodates men working graveyard shift.   

During their stay at Benedict House residents have time to develop and implement an individualized strengths-based transition plan that will assist them on their journey to self-sufficiency. 

Intakes, screenings and background checks take place on-site.

Transitional Housing
Benedict House provides 10 transitional beds for homeless men.  The program is for men who are currently in the Benedict House Emergency Shelter Program.  The program is 12 months in length and costs residents 30% of their verified income.  Residents are required to meet with the Case Manager on staff monthly.  They are also required to take part in self-bettering activities, classes, meetings, and sessions as they are available. 

Benedict House provides a furnished family unit for homeless men with children in Kitsap County. The program is 2 years in length and costs residents 30% of their verified income.  Residents are required to meet with their Site Monitor weekly.  They are also required to take part in self-bettering exercises, classes, meetings and sessions as they are available.    

Applicants must be an emergency shelter resident.

Our Services

Support Services — Individualized Transition Plans are designed to provide all residents with a seamless service delivery and service coordination.  Benedict House staff utilizes a team approach in providing wraparound support for its residents. 

Meals — Volunteers from area churches prepare the evening meal, which is served in a communal dining area on the first floor, adjacent to the kitchen.  The dining area serves as a multi-purpose room for group activities or trainings.   

Housing— clean and sober living arrangements are provided in a physically and emotionally safe environment.  Dormitory for 24 single men and a private unit with bathroom for a homeless man with children.  All sheets, towels and toiletries are provided, including shower and restroom facilities. Locked storage is available.

Computer Usage - Computers are available for resumes, job searches, e-mail and to practice typing. Including access to supplies, copier, printer, fax and phone.

Enrichment Classes - Several areas are covered to reduce barriers holding individuals back from success.  Financial / Budgeting / Credit Counseling, Renter Responsibility, Resume Building, and more. 

AA and NA Meetings residents have opportunity to attend off site meetings.

Counseling Mental healt support provided for stability. 

Health Room - Local volunteer nurses provide basic medical support and referrals. The Kitsap Health District provides annual flu shots, TB testing and additional services. 

Security and Safety - 24 hour/7day staffing provide effective security and support.
